What’s Happening in The World of WAFS. December 4, 2009

The Ocoee Service Department installed a 15,000 gallon pressure tank at Hospice of Marion County. The contract included the retrofitting of their facility with attic sprinklers and the installation of a pressure tank to give them the proper flow and duration since there was no city water available. The project was drawn by Greg Whigham & James Balius, was installed by Joe Rotarius and Nick Lindsey, and supervised by Marty Brasher.

A pressure tank is a pretty unusual installation. I can only remember seeing but one of them when I was about 15 years old. Something different. Thanks for sharing the picture.

Last week in Baltimore, Maryland the IRC (International Residential Building Code) voted for the 2nd edition in a row to sprinkler all new single family homes beginning January 1, 2011. This has been a heavily debated topic among the Home Builders, Building Officials and Fire Officials. Pete Schwab, myself  & Chris Williams took a van with 10 people from the Charlotte to Baltimore to help vote in favor of sprinklers. This link is a photo of the floor vote in support of single family sprinklers.  It was an amazing moment to see the overwhelming support of life safety. There is still work to be done at each state level to adopt the new code in its entirety but sprinklers in all homes are coming.

The Ocoee Commercial Department is installing a parking garage at UCF in Orlando. The system was roughed in and they were preparing to test the system. If you look closely at the this picture in the following link you can see a Lincoln Town car that had caught fire and set off two heads. This was prior to C.O.

About two years ago we asked TYCO to come up with a “leaky CPVC fitting” that would help prevent dry fits. They have patented the idea and are in the process of retooling at the tune of $1 Million a size to make fittings that have grooves in the socket of the fitting. If it’s glued properly the glue fills the void in the groove. If it’s not glued (dry fitted) it whistles when air is applied or leaks with water on it. No more dry fits that blow apart 3 months done the road. Pretty cool.

leaky fitting
You can see the groove in a 1” cross in this picture.
