Damen Reid with his WAFS support team!

The 2011 Backflow Blitz competition measures an individual’s skill at dismantling a backflow and putting back together, properly in the shortest time, without using a channel lock! WAFS was the only fire sprinkler company in the competition here in Central Florida! Other companies were plumbers and backflow providers.

There’s No Place Like Home… When It’s Protected by Residential Sprinklers

This past August, Wayne Automatic Fire Sprinklers, Concord, NC, installed a multipurpose fire sprinkler system in the Ideal Dream House at the Charlotte, NC Southern Ideal Home Show. Their effort helped reached thousands of people with the message that fire sprinklers save lives and property. Approximately 35,000 people attended the show.

John Leonard, deputy fire marshal for the Charlotte, NC Fire Department said, “We were able to use this show home as an educational event…Our staff manned a booth next to the home and we talked about fire safety and residential fire sprinkler systems. We also had a fire sprinkler demonstration trailer on hand to show how sprinklers activate…I wish we could reach this many people every week with the fire sprinkler message.”

Ocoee Team Members Demonstate Fire Sprinklers in Action!

WAFS team members Phil Blackmer, Greg Whigham, John Bowman and Tom Calabro helped at the side by side burn held at the Lake Mary Home Depot. It was put on by the Florida Fire Sprinkler Association for fire prevention week.

Two small 8 ft x 8 ft structures were assembled and loaded with couches, table, chair, computers, pictures etc. One was not protected and the other was protected by 1 sprinkler supplied by a fire hydrant in the parking lot. Spectators were amazed at how fast the unprotected building burned. Each fire was started in a small trash can with shredded paper.

The unprotected structure  reached flash-over in less than two minutes when everything that can burn, ignites instantly. Had the fire occurred in a real home, the Lake Mary Fire Department (with an average response time of 8 minutes) would be battling a large scale fire!

As for the protected structure….fire didn’t even burn up the shredded paper in the can before it was extinguished by the automatic fire sprinkler

The Side by Side Burn on April 24 at the Del Prado Elementary School Health and Safety Fair was a great success.

This demonstration was a bit of a challenge. We typically construct the burn units the day prior to the demonstration; as this event was on the grounds of an elementary school, we were not allowed on-site preparations until Saturday morning at 7:00 am. The fair started at 9:00 am. Thanks to John Duffin and his crew from Wayne Automatic, we built the units, removed the units, and cleaned the site in one day. Thanks also to Neal Baluha, who has never missed one of our sprinkler demos. In addition to Neal’s essential preparations with the local fire station personnel, Neal worked throughout the day handing out Sprinklerman coloring books, and worked till day’s end in the tear down of the units and cleanup of the site. And he brought his own tools!

Bob Kleinheinz was exceptional in adapting his educational presentation to our audience of hundreds of school children and their parents. Bob always does a great job in moderating these demonstrations. And Bob’s 33 years in the fire service is invaluable in the required site coordination with the firefighters. Bob also answered questions from the crowd and distributed residential fire sprinkler literature throughout the day. Great job, Bob!
